about
I wrote this song in solidarity with the Palestinian people and urgent calls for a ceasefire in Gaza. All proceeds from the song will be donated to humanitarian aid and animal rescue in Gaza. I dedicate this song to the people and animals of Gaza. The ongoing retaliatory attack on Gaza by the Israeli government will go down in history as one of the lowest points in humanity. This is clearly a genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza - an unjustified, intentional massacre and maiming of civilians, destruction of their healthcare, hospitals, homes, businesses, schools, infrastructure, places of worship, history, culture, their animals and environment. Not only have they been bombed with unprecedented force, even in places they were told to evacuate to, but they are being intentionally killed by starvation, dehydration, disease from overcrowding, and an inhumane deprivation of the most basic medical care such as morphine and anesthesia. This is a continuation of over half a century of persecution and oppression of Palestinians by Israel. My feelings of helplessness, anger, horror, shock, grief and disbelief culminated in this song. Sadly, three months after writing this song, I continue to be more horrified every day by the images the brave surviving journalists in Gaza are showing the world. I am extremely proud of my home country South Africa for their courage to invoke the genocide convention against Israel, and grateful to the South African legal team for their excellent presentation at the International Court of Justice. Nelson Mandela would be so proud. Genocide is never an acceptable response under any circumstances. #ceasefireinGaza #Gaza #Palestine

I Am Not Hamas – Song for Gaza (music and lyrics by Nicolette Aubourg)
I am not Hamas.
I am a father who had a son.
I could not save him from the bombs.
I am not Hamas.
I am a mother with my dead child
I hold forever in my mind.
I am not Hamas.
I am a daughter who once was loved
by my family who are gone.
I am not Hamas.
I am a doctor from afar
who came to help the sick and broken.
Now the streets are crying with our blood
And the buildings fall to the sounds of war
But I am not Hamas.
I am not Hamas.
I am a tree who used to shade
the people passing in the street.
I am not Hamas.
I am a school where children laughed
and studied for a better life.
I am not Hamas.
I am a rescuer of animals
that have no water, food or love.
I am not Hamas.
I am a dog whose legs were crushed
when the buildings fell on us.
Now the streets are crying with our blood
And the buildings fall to the sounds of war
But I am not Hamas.
I am not Hamas.
I am a thousand refugees
under the rubble in the camp.
I am not Hamas.
I am a baby who is placed in bags.
I never blamed or harmed anyone.
I am not Hamas.
I am a hospital that values life
and dignifies the ones who die.
I am not Hamas.
I am a journalist who shows the world
the images unspeakable.
Now the streets are crying with our blood
And the buildings fall to the sounds of war
But I am not Hamas.
