Those of us who have had the privilege of loving and being loved by a dog also know the heartbreak of losing them. I wrote this about my dog Cowgirl.

They say she came from Fresno, California.
We were looking for a friend to fill a void
and somehow we were blessed to take her home.

She always gave her love and asked for little in return.
Her acceptance without judgment was a lesson to be learned.
Her devotion had no need for words.

And so she came into our lives -
The dog with the moon in her eyes.
Her heart was pure joy and light.
She could melt you with her smile
Or charm you with the brightest mind -

I always knew the day would come that we would part
and there’d be a space the shape of her inside my heart
that no other love could fit inside the same.
